What they’ll do
Access classes flex with what opens that week — illustrative, not a fixed checklist:
Huaqiangbei at night. First night in China. Walk through LED walls, street vendors, stacks of circuit boards spilling onto sidewalks. No agenda — just absorb the chaos. A guide points out: “That building? $3 billion of components inside right now.” Sets the tone: this is not a holiday.
Build a Bluetooth speaker from sourced parts. Go to Huaqiangbei components market with a parts list. Buy drivers, enclosures, cables, battery, Bluetooth module — real components from real supply chains. Assemble in a workshop. End with a working speaker or headphones. Three hours from market to music.
Component market scavenger hunt. Each kid gets ¥100 RMB and a mission card: find the strangest component, buy LED strip by the meter, negotiate without speaking English. Translator stays back. They’ll tell this story for years.
Take apart an iPhone. Screwdrivers, spudgers, suction cups. Guided teardown: remove screen, disconnect battery, extract logic board, identify chips under microscope. “This chip is from Taiwan. This one from Korea. This one — Shenzhen.” Mount the logic board in a frame. Every kid has held an iPhone — none have seen its guts.
Robot dog race. Visit a robotics company. Engineer demo: robot dog flips, dances, climbs stairs. Each kid gets 30 minutes to pilot one. Relay race — robot dogs vs. robot dogs, kids as pilots. Group photo with synchronized tricks.
3D print your own design. Learn Tinkercad basics. Design something — a phone stand, a pendant, a fidget toy. Slice it, print it, hold it. Idea → design → physical object in three hours. The same moment every hardware founder remembers.
Drone night flight. Open park in Shenzhen with LED-lit mini drones. Fly through an obstacle course of trees. Group photo: drone lights spelling their initials. Footage: drone POV over Shenzhen skyline at night.
Factory floor — how millions of things get made. A real Dongguan factory. Not a showroom. PCB assembly line. Pick-and-place machines placing 40,000 components per hour. Reflow ovens. Noise, smell of flux, speed. Most adults never see this. A teenager seeing it changes how they understand the world.
BYD SkyRail / autonomous bus. Ride an elevated monorail or an autonomous bus with no driver. No steering wheel. Vehicle navigates real traffic. “The car is driving itself. There’s no steering wheel. We’re in China.”
World’s longest sea crossing. Bus across the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macao Bridge — 55 km, tunnel under the shipping lane, emerge on an artificial island. 40 minutes over open ocean. Then you’re in Hong Kong.
Show-and-tell night. Hotel conference room or rooftop. Each kid presents their take-home item: the speaker they built, the iPhone logic board in a frame, the strangest component they found, the drone flight video. They’re not tourists. They’re makers. They have artifacts. They have stories.
